Enhancing Infrastructure: Dyke’s Branch Force Main Upgrade
Project Overview:
The Dyke’s Branch Force Main project, executed by I-Solutions, tackled a critical infrastructure challenge necessitated by capacity constraints in the existing force main system. The project spanned from 83rd Street to 93rd Street along Mission Road and took less than one year to complete.
The 14-inch diameter existing force main system faced capacity limitations due to growing demands from the community. The solution was to install a new, larger capacity force main, effectively expanding the system’s capability to accommodate increased flow.
I-Solutions Responsibilities:
I-Solutions was selected as the prime contractor for this project and oversaw the removal and installation of the newly upgraded force main. The team also helped navigate anticipated traffic disruptions during the excavation work, particularly along Mission Road.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges was managing traffic during construction activities, which was affected by numerous underground utilities. To mitigate these challenges, traffic on Mission Road was diverted to southbound lanes, as northbound lanes were closed to ensure the safety of both workers and commuters while maintaining progress on the project.
Unique Aspects
One unique aspect of the project was its cross-municipality scope, which included three different municipalities: Overland Park, Leawood and Prairie Village. This required seamless coordination and cooperation among multiple stakeholders to ensure smooth project execution.
Community Impact
The project contributes to residents’ overall health and safety by upgrading essential utilities across the three municipalities. Furthermore, it is vital in mitigating environmental risks associated with sewage overflows, ensuring a sustainable and resilient infrastructure system.
Despite the inherent complexities involved, the Dyke’s Branch Force Main project was completed on time and within budget.
