I/I Middle Blue River Project: Enhancing Kansas City’s Sewer Infrastructure and Reducing Infiltration Issues
Project Overview
The Inflow/Infiltration (I/I) Middle Blue River Area 13 project addressed critical infrastructure improvements for the City of Kansas City, MO.
The project included total line replacement, 21-point repairs and Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) rehabilitation of over 17,000 feet of sewer main. Additionally, 300 castings were replaced, and upgrades were made to 465 sewer laterals.
The goal was to reduce ground and stormwater infiltration into the sanitary sewer system, causing backups and operational issues. Serving as the prime contractor, the I-Solutions team executed the casting and manhole replacements along with all open-cut rehabilitation work.
Challenges and Solutions
The team coordinated the large project scope with numerous subcontractors and schedules. Continuous team communication and detailed tracking using spreadsheets were key, ensuring alignment across multiple teams and subcontractors.
Community Impact
The improved sewer system reduced the risk of backups and allowed roads to be repaired and repaved in areas where open-cut operations occurred.
Notable Aspects
The project highlighted the dedication and organizational skills of the team, particularly the superintendents who managed daily progress tracking.
Throughout the project, the team utilized specialized equipment such as the PC-138 and PC-238.
Lessons Learned
Key lessons emphasized the necessity of overcommunication and meticulous tracking to maintain up-to-date and accurate information across all project phases.
The project was completed on time and within budget. The team began construction on the I/I Middle Blue River Area 13 project in December 2022 and finalized it in November of 2023.
